Morning Sports: March 9, 2026
Sheridan/Buffalo HS Basketball: The small school basketball teams had their turn to shine on the court this past weekend, and now it’s time for the big schools to have their turn.
The Sheridan boys won the 4A East Regional tournament this past weekend in Gillette, beating both Gillette teams along the way.
The Broncs will have the #1 seed out of the East going into the state tournament in Casper.
The team will take on Green River in the first round on Thursday at Casper College, beginning at 1:30pm.
The Lady Broncs are the #4 seed out of the East, and will also play Green River in the first round on Thursday.
Their start time is at 10:30am.
Both Buffalo teams will also play in Casper as #4 seeds.
The Bison go up against Lovell at 1:30pm, while the Lady Bison will take on Cody at 5pm.
Both of those games will be played at the Ford Wyoming Center.

Big Horn/Tongue River HS Basketball: At the 2A State Basketball Tournament this past weekend, both the Big Horn boys and the Tongue River girls went 1-2 over the weekend and played in the 3rd place game.
The Rams finished the season with a record of 19-7, while the Lady Eagles were 18-11.
The BH girls went 0-2 at the state tournament, and finished with a record of 21-6.
The Thermopolis boys and the Sundance girls won the 2A State Titles.

Wyoming High School Indoor Track and Field State Meet: This past weekend was also the Indoor Track and Field State Meet in Gillette.
The Sheridan boys finished as 4A State Runners-Up and the Big Horn boys finished 3rd in Class 3A.
For the Broncs, Ryder Charest won the 800 meter run and Eli Balkenbush won in the 1600 meter event.
The Broncs also won 4 relay races.
Rio Hernandez won the 400 meter dash for the Rams, plus the 4 by 400 meter relay team finished 1st.
Ellie Fritz was the lone champ for Tongue River winning the girls 800 meter run.

Practice For Spring Sports Season Starts: With one weekend remaining in the Wyoming High School Winter Sports Season, it’s already time to start thinking about spring sports.
Practice for soccer, outdoor track and field and softball start today.
Competition can start as early as Thursday, March 19th.
The Sheridan Mavericks lacrosse team started practice last week, and are scheduled to play their first games in April.
Sheridan Girls Amateur Hockey: Sheridan went 0-3 at the state tournament this past weekend in Cheyenne, to conclude their season.
Pinedale defeated Cheyenne in the championship game.
Sheridan Hawks Junior Hockey: The regular season has concluded for the Sheridan Hawks and now it’s on to the playoffs.
Thanks to a pair of wins this past weekend vs. Cody, the team will be the #1 seed for the NA3HL Frontier Division playoffs.
Sheridan will take on Rapid City in a best 2 of 3 series this week.
Game 1 is scheduled for Wednesday, on the road, starting at 7:05pm.
Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at the M&M Center, with the puck dropping at 7:30pm.
Game 3 if needed, would also be in Sheridan with the same start time.
The other playoff series is between Great Falls and Helena.
University of Wyoming Men’s and Women’s Basketball: It’s post season time for the Wyoming Cowboys.
The Pokes won their regular season finale back on Saturday at San Jose State 88-78, thanks in part to shooting 57% for the game, as well as having a perfect 15-for-15 performance at the free throw line and getting 41 points from the bench.
Gavin Gores came off the bench to lead the team with 20 points.
Damarion Dennis and Leland Walker scored 15 and 13 respectively and Simm-Martin Saadi contributed with 10.
The Brown and Gold finish the regular season with a record of 18-13 and have a 9-11 record in the Mountain West Conference, plus they’ve won 5 of their last 6.
UW will have the #9 seed in the upcoming Mountain West Conference Tournament, which starts this coming Wednesday in Las Vegas and will play UNLV in the first game of the day, starting at 1pm.
If they win that game, they would play top seed Utah State in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
As for the Wyoming Cowgirls, their season came to an end back on Saturday with a 60-53 loss against Air Force in the Women’s Mountain West Conference tournament.
Malene Pedersen dropped 29 points in her last game for the Brown and Gold, who finish the season with a record of 10-20.
Air Force is still alive in the tournament after upsetting top seed San Diego State yesterday.
They’ll take on Boise State in the semifinals today.
The other semifinal is between UNLV and Colorado State.
Denver Nuggets Basketball: The Denver Nuggets lost on Friday at home vs. New York 142-103.
The Nuggets are next scheduled to play today at Oklahoma City.
Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
Colorado Avalanche Hockey: The Colorado Avalanche won on Friday at Dallas 5-4, prevailing in a shootout 2-0, then won yesterday at home vs. Minnesota 3-2, also via shootout 2-1.
The Avs are next scheduled to play tomorrow at home vs. Edmonton.
Colorado Rockies Pre-Season Baseball: The Colorado Rockies went 2-0 with 1 tie this past weekend.
On Friday, the Rocks won at the Athletics 11-6.
Brett Sullivan hit a 3-run blast, Kyle Karros had a 2-run and a solo shot, while Chad Stevens hit a solo home run of his own.
Colorado won on Saturday at the LA Dodgers 6-4, then played to a 4-4 tie yesterday at home vs. Cleveland.
The Rockies are scheduled to play today at the Chicago White Sox, starting at 2:05pm.
