One Sheridan High School runner and a Sheridan High School grad outran the competition ahead of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo parade.

Soon to be junior Jaelyn Ruybal, and 2023 graduate Austin Akers respectively won the women’s and men’s Sneakers and Spurs 5K races.

Ruybal is a repeat winner who also participates on the Lady Bronc cross country and track and field teams.

She says she and her teammates made the most of the home course advantage.

“Having done it so many years, you can kind of find the familiar landmarks, while you’re racing and remember how much longer you have on certain parts of the course and we run around all the parts of town where we run our workouts, so it’s familiar footing too.”

Akers has been running for about 10 years and currently runs for the University of Wyoming.

Practice starts in about 1 month, and he says this race was a good way to help get ready for the upcoming season.

“We start ramping up in the summer. Our season goes all the way into November, so this is just the first step for breaking the wall as they say and this is just something fun to throw in some ambience, it’s a nice atmosphere into the first part of the tempo.”
