Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball: In sports, sometimes it’s all about peaking at the right time during the season.
The Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball team arguably did that this season, but not so much in years’ past.
Last year in early June, the team swept a home conference double-header vs. Cheyenne Post 6, which got the attention of every other team in Wyoming.
After that, the Troopers’ balloon slowly deflated and things did not get back to where they were.
The year before, Sheridan had the #1 seed going into the state tournament, but did not even get halfway through the bracket.
This year, after winning the Rapid City tournament, Sheridan hit a mid-season slump for the latter 3-quarters of June, but once July started, the players were able to flip the switch, re-established momentum and it carried the team to a state runner-up finish.
Head Coach Austin Cowen says he told his players in all of those scenarios, there were pluses and minuses.
Wyoming State Champ Gillette, will take on Alaska State Champ Anchorage in the first game of the day at 9:30am.
The AA Northwest Regional Tournament starts tomorrow in Billings.
The A-League Northwest Regional Tournament starts on Thursday, as Lovell will play the last game of the day, against the host team, Burley, Idaho.
Wyoming High School Sports Co-Oping: While the uniforms this past season said Sheridan, not all the players for the softball team went to high school in Sheridan.
Through what’s called a combination school agreement, or co-oping, the Lady Broncs also had players from Buffalo, Big Horn and Tongue River.
Depending on the sport, it’s a common occurrence in Wyoming High Schools, where players from a school that does not offer a particular sport, travel to practice and play with the closest high school that does offer that sport.
For example, Arvada-Clearmont co-ops with Buffalo in football, because it’s the closest school, even though the Panthers and the Bison are in 2 different counties.
There’s one catch, and that is there is no rule that says a school must accept players from another school, where a sport is not offered.
Wyoming High School Activities Association Commissioner Trevor Wilson says there’s a better chance for a school to co-op with another, if the sport doesn’t have many teams in the state.
In other words, when schools co-op in a sport where there’s more than 1 class, there is a possibility that the co-op agreement could force the host sport school to move up 1 class.
Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies were clobbered last night in the first game of a 3-game series at home vs. Toronto 15-1.
With the loss, it means for the 7th year in a row, the Rocks will finish the season with a losing record.
Game 2 of the 3-game series is today, starting at 6:40pm.
