Soccer – The Sheridan High School soccer teams started conference play this past weekend.

Sheridan Media’s Kevin Koile has the recap.

Track and Field – The Sheridan Track and Field team competed at a meet in Broomfield, Colorado on Saturday.

Results have not yet come in, but we’ll post them at Sheridanmedia.com, when they become available.

Sheridan along with Big Horn, Tongue River and Arvada-Clearmont are scheduled to compete at the Jerry Campbell Track Meet in Buffalo this coming Saturday.

Wrestling – The high school wrestling season is not necessarily over after the state meet.

This past weekend, six Sheridan wrestlers competed at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association folk style wrestling national championship tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Wrestlers compete against other wrestlers within their grade level (freshmen vs. freshmen, sophomores vs. sophomores, etc…), in an effort to place in the top 8, which wins them All-American status.

Bronc wrestlers Dane Steel and Kolten Powers won that honor, after placing in the top 8 of their respective weight class and grade level.

Steel was 5th in the sophomore 145 pound weight class.

He had a record of 5-2 on the weekend, making it to the championship semi-finals, before dropping to the consolation bracket.

Steel in the Wyoming 4A 152 pound state champ, and was the only sophomore on team Wyoming to place in the top 8.

Powers was 4th in the junior 113 pound weight class.

He had a record of 4-2 on the weekend, and also made it to the championship semi-finals, before dropping to the consolation bracket.

Powers is the Wyoming 4A 120 pound state runner up.

Other Sheridan HS wrestlers that competed in Virginia Beach include:

Kelten Crow – Freshman 138 pounds

Nahir Aguirre – Sophomore 152 pounds

Terran Grooms – Sophomore 152 pounds

Aiden Selcher – Junior 195 pounds

UW Cowgirl Basketball – The season for the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team ended back on Thursday with a triple overtime loss at home vs. UCLA 82-81 in the women’s N-I-T tournament.

On Friday, head coach Gerald Mattinson announced his retirement after spending 19 years with the program…the last 3 as head coach.

During those 3 years, the Cowgirls won the Mountain West Conference Tournament last year, and they would automatically qualify for the women’s N-C-A-A tournament.

This year and in 2020, UW played in the women’s N-I-T tournament.

Mattinson’s successor has already been named.

Heather Ezell will take the reigns.

She has been with the team since 2015, and has the been the associate head coach in each of the past 3 seasons.

Colorado Rockies Baseball – The Colorado Rockies won 2, lost 1 and tied 1 in spring training baseball this past weekend.

On Friday they won at the Chicago Cubs 17-to-1, then on Saturday they won home against the Texas Rangers 8-to-7.

Yesterday the team split up for 2 road games.

One squad played to a 4-4 draw at Cincinnati, while the other squad lost at Arizona 5-to-2.

Colorado is 5-and-5 with 2 ties on the spring season.

Today is an off day.

They will be back in action tomorrow at home against the L-A Angels.

The regular season is scheduled to begin 1 week from this coming Friday.
