The President of Sheridan College has been recognized for supporting student success both inside and outside of the classroom.
Doctor Walter Tribley was recently selected as one of 20 recipients of the 2024 Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction by the Sheridan College Iota Theta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
The National Award recognizes college presidents that show outstanding behavior and exceptional commitment to support students in pursuit of their future success through degree completion, transfer and employment.
When the covid pandemic started back in 2020, the Sheridan College Iota Theta chapter faced significant challenges, but continued to grow during Dr. Tribley’s tenure.
In 2021 it was a two-star chapter, and this past January it was upgraded to a five-star chapter.
Madison Clarke who is the Vice-President of Leadership of the Sheridan College Chapter says all but one of the PTK students are from the agriculture department.
She adds thanks to some help from Dr. Tribley, there have been many opportunities for students to learn and for the organization to grow.
“We have so many opportunities to participate in research, to participate in international conferences and find leadership roles not just within Sheridan College, but within these international organizations and we get a lot of opportunities that students don’t really get until their junior or senior year at a university, so that’s really special to us.”
The Award of Distinction was named after the late Doctor Shirley Gordon who was Phi Theta Kappa’s longest serving Chair of the Board of Directors.
