City Requests Caution from Drivers as School Begins

In less than two weeks, Sheridan students will be returning to school. Sheridan City Council Member Jack Wood and Human Resources Director Heather Doke made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, reminding motorists to slow down and stay alert around schools, crosswalks and intersections. 

Having driven school buses in the past, Wood has witnessed motorists passing school buses while the stop arm is extended and red lights are operating. Wood used a specific instance as reference involving vehicles traveling in the far lanes of Sheridan’s four lane roads. Wood said bus drivers will take photos and report drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses utilizing their stop arm and flashing lights.

Motorists must stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights, even when children are not immediately visible. The first offense of illegally passing a stopped school bus carries a $435 fine. City officials are urging drivers to allow extra time and expect the unexpected.

Doke said some classes are already in session and drivers should expect increased traffic during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times and she reminded drivers to also watch carefully for children walking or riding bicycles. 

Parents are also encouraged to have a conversation with their children and remind young bicyclists to use appropriate crossings, look both ways before venturing into streets and wear helmets.
