July is normally one of the warmest months of the year, and this year’s average temperature readings for the month are going to stay in the record book for some time.

The National Weather Service Office in Billings, Montana says the average temperature for July 2026 in the Sheridan area, was 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit.

That’s more than 5 degrees warmer compared to July of last year and it is the second warmest July on record, only behind July of 1936, when the average temperature climbed to 77.9 degrees.

Temperature readings are kept at the Sheridan County Airport, which recorded a high temperature of 109 degrees on July 12th, making it the highest temperature ever recorded.

Emily Archer with the National Weather Service, explains why this July was warmer than most.

“We just ended up with a pretty persistent warm weather pattern. We had an upper level ridge set up over the region, which just helped keep temperatures a lot warmer and skies mostly clear. It was just kind of where the ridge set up. It could of set up east of us, or west of us, it’s just this time around happened to set up right over us. It’s just been kind of a continuous on and off pattern of, we get warm and then we’ll briefly cool down a bit and then we get warm again.”

The National Weather Service Office in Riverton says the Buffalo area had its warmest July on record last month, with an average temperature of 76.6 degrees, beating the old July record of 76.3 set in 2012.

The Johnson County Airport also recorded the area’s highest temperature on record on July 12th, when the thermometer got up to 105 degrees.
