City Administrator Addresses Flock Cameras

Flock cameras were addressed by the City Administrator at this week’s Sheridan City Council study session. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

A flock camera is an automated license plate reader made by the company Flock Safety. The solar powered cameras are placed on poles and at street corners to log the information from vehicles passing by.  Some law enforcement agencies have used them to trace vehicles linked to crimes. There has been quite a kerfuffle on social media over the last few weeks over whether or not flock cameras are being placed throughout Sheridan and Sheridan County. City Administrator Stu McRae addressed the situation at Monday night’s Sheridan City Council study session.

Opponents of flock cameras throughout the country point to misuse of the cameras by law enforcement and that the network builds a warrantless, centralized mass surveillance system that tracks the daily patterns of citizens without probable cause.
