“William Gollings: Collected Treasures” on Display at Brinton Museum

William Gollings: Collected Treasures, is on view at the Brinton Museum from August 14 through December 21, 2026. As part of The Brinton’s 2026 theme, “Our Legends”, this exhibition showcases the breadth of Gollings’s artistic career and celebrates the work of this Wyoming legend.

Elling William “Bill” Gollings (1878-1932) was an artist known for his realistic depictions of cowboy life, with strong ties to Sheridan, Wyoming and to the Quarter Circle A Ranch.

On August 14, the Brinton Museum held a reception for the opening of the exhibition, and Curatorial Director Jochen Wierich had this to say about the exhibit.

He said there are a few pieces that are in the Brinton Collection, but they wanted to shift the focus onto those that were not often exhibited. He said he is still getting calls from other collectors who wonder if they want any other Gollings artwork.

Jochen said that even if Gollings wasn’t born here, his home was Sheridan.

Gollings showed artistic talent early on, and was encouraged to pursue a career in art.

This exhibit is a natural pairing, as Gollings knew Brinton and possibly corresponded with him. Weirich said,

In addition to light refreshments, there was a station with pencils and paper where those attending could write cowboy poetry, inspired by the artwork in the show.

This exhibition features works from private collections that have rarely if ever been shown at The Brinton Museum. These loans, supplemented by a few works from The Brinton Museum collection, represent some of the best paintings, etchings, and drawings created by Gollings. They show the breadth of themes that always occupied him: the history of the Old West, especially of Cowboys and Indians set against the open range of southern Montana and northern Wyoming.

The event was attended by a large crowd. The exhibition will be on display through December 21, and it is free and open to the public.
