SCSD#1 Ready for Back to School
School will begin for students in SCSD#1 on Monday, August 24. Since learning begins early for children, the featured presentation at Tuesday’s Board of Trustee meeting was about SCSD#1 Early Childhood Learning programs. The program was presented by Kendra Barney director at the Big Horn Early Childhood Learning preschool.
She also introduced Kami Smith Executive Director at Tongue River Childs Place.

Barney said she always liked it when school started again, even though it could be stressful. She said that in the early childhood learning program they had what they needed this year.
She said that with the early childhood learning they focus on building strong foundations for the children.
We want the foundation to be a shared vision between all of us, Barney said.

One thing they focus on is play.
She gave the example of learning to drive, how we didn’t learn to drive in a manual, but it started with play, and sitting on a someone’s lap and steering the car.

She talked about how the pre-school helps to prepare children for kindergarten.
After her presentation, she passed out blocks to all the board members, encouraging them then to think about play.
Jeremy Smith, Business Manager, reported that all positions were filled this year. He added that re-calibration is still happening, and he said that he and Dr. Jones will be meeting via zoom on the subject.
In his superintendents report, Dr. Jeff Jones talked about enthusiasm among the staff,
He passed out a sheet of paper illustrating the ripple effect of influence, and how everyone has a choice of what they promote during the day.

In other business, the board moved to approve several policies on second reading, approved the fiscal year budget amendments, and approved the 2026-27 lunch prices in the district.
Principals from the schools gave reports to the board on the upcoming year and their comments will be another story.
