The Sheridan Community Land Trust (SCLT) invites the public to explore the stories and stewardship of the Big Goose Natural Area during an upcoming SCLT Discovery Session: Big Goose Natural Area History and Land Tour on Saturday, April 18 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the SCLT Big Goose Natural Area, 14 Lane Ln.

Kevin Knapp, history manager of SCLT.

Participants will explore the layered history of the property, including Camp Cloud Peak, the K.N. Garden, archaeological survey findings, and the historic streetcar line that once connected the area. Along the way, attendees will also see conservation in action, with demonstrations and discussion of wildlife-friendly fencing, direct-to-satellite virtual fencing, invasive plant treatments, forage improvements, stream restoration, and other stewardship practices that can be applied across working lands in the region.

The program includes a short walk on moderately flat, mowed trails, with optional opportunities to explore off-trail areas. Participants will also have the chance to visit SCLT’s new Welcome Center and enjoy a spring morning on the land.

The Big Goose Natural Area History and Land Tour is free and open to the public. Pets are welcome but must remain on-leash during the tour. Attendees are encouraged to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes due to seasonal tick activity.

While the event is free, sign-ups are encouraged.

SCLT’s Discovery Sessions are designed to connect people to the land through hands-on learning and shared experiences. This program offers a rare opportunity to see how history and conservation come together on the landscape, and how those lessons can be applied across Sheridan County.

SCLT also announced their silent auction of art and historic maps is now live, with bidding through April 15 at 5:00 p.m. MDT.From local artwork to historic maps, each piece offers a unique connection to the landscape and history we all care about.

You’re invited to place your bids online at your convenience. You can stop by the SCLT Welcome Center at the Big Goose Natural Area to view the collection in person. We are generally open 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, unless we’re out working on the trails, researching history, or helping steward local lands.

Every dollar from the auction supports the Welcome Center and SCLT’s work to conserve land, expand public access, preserve local history, and connect our community to the places that make Sheridan County special.
