Thanks to Give your Heart to Child, everyone’s invited to play at the Sheridan County YMCA

The Sheridan County YMCA operates a scholarship program that ensures everyone can participate at the local YMCA.
While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Executive Director of the Sheridan County YMCA, Liz Cassiday, said it is part of the local mission of the Y to ensure that no child is turned away from YMCA programs.

Cassiday understands that taking part in team sports at a young age does not mean a child will automatically become a division one player later in life. In fact, sports at a young age are more about the fundamentals of teamwork, working together to reach a goal and simply feeling as if we belong, values and stability that can last a lifetime.

The benefits of children participating in team sports at a young age are even listed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Participating in sports is associated with:
• Lower rates of anxiety and depression
• Lower amounts of stress
• Higher self-esteem and confidence
• Reduced risk of suicide
• Less substance abuse and fewer risky
behaviors
• Increased cognitive performance
• Increased creativity
• Greater enjoyment of all forms of
physical activity
• Improved psychological and emotional
well-being for individuals with disabilities
• Increased life satisfaction
Although the program supports scholarships for many children to participate in YMCA sports, classes, camps, programs and memberships, the campaign raises funds to support scholarships that can be used by people of all ages who meet the requirements.
For those who would like to apply, scholarships are handled with the utmost discretion. To apply contact or visit the Sheridan County YMCA at 417 North Jefferson St. in Sheridan.
