A couple of areas along the Prairie Dog Creek waterbody will soon have some improvements done to better the water quality.

The Sheridan County Conservation District recently approved $37,000 in funding assistance for two water quality improvement projects, as part of their Spring 2023 application period.

Projects that were approved were a stock water fencing request on Prairie Dog Creek and a septic replacement on Dutch Creek.

District Manager Carrie Rogaczewski says these projects as well as others in the past and future are aimed at minimizing pollutant contributions, not just in the Prairie Dog Creek area, but in the Tongue River and Goose Creek areas as well.

“Failed septic systems that are too close to the water bodies, or livestock with unrestricted access to water bodies, so just provides opportunities to help address those and especially in the case of the potential livestock contributions, helps install some practices that can help the landowner improve management so that they can control that.”

Funding for these projects comes from federal and state grants with some contribution from the landowner.

The next application deadline for project consideration is August 1st.
