Plans for a new vehicle maintenance facility for the Wyoming Army National Guard in the Sheridan area continue, and it may be closer to the armory than originally planned.
The Guard was checking out areas along Soldier Creek Road, but those plans have been scrapped, mostly because of a lack of sufficient utilities access to those areas.
Another suggestion was land behind the I-90 Port of Entry about 7 miles northwest of Sheridan, as well as the southeast corner of the intersection of Wyarno and East Ridge Roads, but WYDOT has plans for both of those properties.
The Sheridan Armory currently has one maintenance bay, and the Guard is considering adding on to that, to accommodate more bays, but that won’t leave much room outside to store military vehicles.
Wyoming Adjutant General Greg Porter says a new idea came forward earlier this week.
“Within the last 48 hours, Sheridan College has come up with an idea. They’ve got some land on the east side of I-90, almost directly east of where our current location is here to Sheridan Armory. They’ve got 21 acres over there that may be of interest to us, so we’re pursuing that with the college.”
General Porter adds a decision on the location of the facility should be made within the next month.
The timetable is to break ground on the new facility by this time next year and have it completed in 2025.
Currently military vehicles from the Sheridan armory have maintenance work done in Lovell, but once the new Sheridan facility is completed, the Lovell facility will be shut down.
The new facility will have 4-to-6 bays, and will be used to do maintenance work on military vehicles from Sheridan, Powell, Worland and Gillette.
