Operation Green Light event will feature drive for items to support local Vets
Operation Green Light for Veterans is a nationwide initiative encouraging individuals, businesses and local governments to show support for US Veterans by lighting front doors of businesses and homes with green bulbs from Nov. 4 – 11.
This effort highlights the challenges many Veterans face when transitioning from military to civilian life and serves as a visible reminder that communities stand with them. The color green is recognized as a symbol of hope, renewal and moving forward.
The City of Sheridan will once again join this national effort by hosting an Operation Green Light kickoff celebration.
The kickoff event is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Whitney Commons Park, 320 W. Alger St., in Sheridan. The event will include Veteran resource tables, music, family activities, complimentary refreshments and the Fatbacks Southern BBQ truck. Free green light bulbs will be available for the public while supplies last, and the event will also host a collection for nonperishable foods and personal care items to benefit local Veterans.
According to the announcement, requested items include winter hats and gloves, thermoses and water bottles, men’s clothing sizes 3X to 7X, travel-size toiletries, luggage and backpacks, slippers, new women’s underwear, socks and gift cards for local box stores or fuel.
According to Veterans Affairs, Operation Green Light invites the public to participate by replacing porch lights with green bulbs, sharing photos on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight, learning about local Veteran services and reaching out directly to Veterans in their lives.
The VA reports that last year, more than 3,000 counties, parishes and towns across the nation were expected to take part in the initiative.
Organizers say the goal is to demonstrate that Veterans are seen, valued and supported in the communities where they live.
