Morning Sports: December 29, 2023

University of Wyoming Football and Basketball: The end of the year may be near, but tomorrow is a huge day for University of Wyoming Athletics.

The Cowboy football team kicks off the Arizona Bowl against Toledo at 2:30pm from Tucson, Arizona.

You can hear that game LIVE on AM 1410 KWYO and 106.9 FM.

There’s also 2 basketball games tomorrow.

At 4pm, the UW men’s team plays their final non-conference game of the season at BYU.

At 12:30pm, the UW women’s team starts conference play at home vs. Boise State.

Denver Broncos Football: The Denver Broncos play their regular season home finale on Sunday vs. the LA Chargers.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:25pm and that game will be LIVE on AM 1410 KWYO and 106.9 FM.

The Broncos are 1 game behind in the race for the final wild card spot in the AFC with 2 games remaining.

Sheridan County High School Sports Year In Review: Since it’s the end of the year, it’s time to do our Sheridan County High School sports year in review for 2023.

We’ll start with the winter sports season.

In basketball, the Sheridan girls made it to the 4A state tournament and advanced to the semi-finals.

For the second year in a row the Big Horn and Tongue River boys teams finished 2nd and 3rd respectively at the 2A state tournament.

The TR girls also made the trip to Casper and lost in the 3rd place game.

The Arvada-Clearmont girls also made a postseason appearance in Casper.

In wrestling, for the first time since 1990, and only the second time in school history, Sheridan was 4A State champs.

The Broncs had 9 wrestlers in the championship match of their respective weight class, winning 3 of them.

2023 was the debut of girls varsity wrestling and Becca Oetken of Sheridan was a part of that initial state championship class.

The Lady Broncs finished 3rd overall in the team standings.

In boys swimming, Sheridan finished 3rd at the state meet, making it the first time since 1986 that the team has finished in 3rd place or better.

The Sheridan girls indoor track and field team were state champs in 2023, while the boys finished 3rd.

Sheridan had a nordic ski team for the first time ever.

The boys finished in 6th at the state meet, while the girls were 7th.

Switching to the spring sports season, the Sheridan boys soccer team placed 3rd at the state tournament, while the girls lost in the consolation championship.

In outdoor track and field, the Sheridan boys placed 4th at the state meet and the girls were 3rd in Class 4A.

Addie Pendergast set a new overall state record in the girls 400 meter dash.

The Big Horn boys were 2A state champs, and the Tongue River boys placed 3rd.

In Lacrosse, the Sheridan Mavericks placed 6th for the season and the girls were 3rd.

In the summer, the Sheridan Troopers legion baseball team went 41-23 on the season and had the #1 seed going into the state tournament, but came up short in the quest.

Cheyenne Post 6 not only won the state tournament, they also won the northwest regional tournament, becoming the first Wyoming team ever to make it to the Legion World Series, where they made it all the way to the national semi-finals.

In the fall, the Sheridan Bronc football team 3-peated as state champs, and ran their winning streak to 31-games in a row, which is the 2nd longest winning streak in Wyoming High School football history.

The record is 34.

The Big Horn Rams were 2A state runners-up.

Tongue River also made it to the post-season.

In volleyball, Big Horn won their 2nd 2A state title in 3 years, while TR finished 3rd for the 2nd year in a row.

In golf, the Sheridan girls won their 2nd 4A state championship in 3 years, while the Tongue River boys placed 3rd in 2A.

In tennis, the Sheridan boys were 3rd and girls were 5th at the state meet.

In cross country, the Sheridan girls placed 4th and the boys were 6th.

And in girls swimming, Sheridan placed 5th.

One other note to mention, back in October, the school board within Sheridan County School District #2, officially approved the formation of a varsity softball team at Sheridan High School.

The first games will take place in March of 2025.

Rodeo Stories of 2023:

Wyatt Phelps of Sheridan College placed 4th in the Bull Riding at the 2023 College National Finals Rodeo.

Clancy Glenn and Joseph Priebe also qualified for the CNFR in saddle bronc riding.

Former Sheridan College saddle bronc rider Zeke Thruston repeated as world champ. It’s his 4th world championship overall.
