Sheridan County Officials Urge Caution Amid Fire Weather Conditions

The Sheridan County Commissioners, in collaboration with the Rural Fire Department Chiefs and the County Fire Warden, announce that the current conditions do not necessitate fire restrictions, however this status could change rapidly due to the heat, low relative humidity, and breezy winds. In the absence of restrictions, officials with Sheridan County urge all residents to exercise extreme caution with activities that could potentially spark and start a wildfire. Specifically, residents are advised against any burning activities, including burn barrels, during hot, dry, and windy conditions.

For those planning small recreational fires, ensure there is a non-flammable zone of at least 15 feet around the fire. Suitable materials for this zone include gravel or green grass. Always ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving it unattended. Additional safety precautions include establishing a 15-foot non-flammable zone around any grinding or welding activities. Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, as the heat from mufflers and catalytic converters can ignite a fire. Check trailer chains to ensure they do not drag on the pavement and cause sparks. Have a fire extinguisher or water sprayer readily available on equipment when cutting and baling hay.

If weather conditions permit open burning, be sure to notify dispatch prior to any planned burning and have fire tools, water, and a phone readily available during your planned burn.
