Habitat reports that through volunteer labor and donations of both money and materials, the organization is able to build simple, decent houses with the aid of the partner families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with a no interest loan. A minimal down payment of $3,500 is required.
Jensen said Habitat is not a giveaway program, they provide a hand up and not a hand out. In addition to the down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, known as sweat equity, into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.
