On Saturday, October 7th 2023, Sheridan Fire-Rescue (SFR), Sheridan Police Department (SPD), Goose Valley Fire Department (GVFD), and Wyoming Regional EMS (WREMS) responded to 10 W. Works St. at 6:54pm for the report of fire in a multi-occupant structure.

At 6:55, SFR Engine 2 (E-2) arrived on scene of a three-story apartment building with no obvious smoke or fire showing from the building.

Incident command was established and E-2’s crew proceeded to the third floor apartment to investigate.

When the crew arrived at the apartment, the occupant advised a fire started on the stove top from cooking and the fire was out.

E-2’s crew confirmed the fire was out and checked for any fire extension, not finding anything.

Fire crews conducted a search of the apartment to confirm there were no other occupants or pets still inside, finding no one.

The apartment was systematically ventilated to clear the smoke and restore the fire alarms that had activated.

SPD assisted the fire crew with bystander and traffic control.

WREMS responded to evaluate the occupant for any adverse effects from the cooking fire and transported to Sheridan Memorial Hospital for additional evaluation.

GVFD was advised to cancel their response.

There were no injuries to emergency responders during this incident.

SFR continues to stress the importance of staying in the kitchen while cooking.

If you have a fire on the stove top, turn off the burner and cover the pan with a lid or other non-combustible item to smother the fire.

Do not carry a burning pan from the stove, as this can spread a trail of fire along the path.

Always close doors as you exit, this creates a closed compartment and limits the fresh air that the fire needs for growth.
