Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball/WY State Championship Tournament: It was not the finish that the Sheridan Troopers wanted, as the team lost to Gillette on Friday 4-3, in the Wyoming Legion Baseball AA State Championship Game in Cheyenne.

Starting pitcher Avon Barney pitched a complete game 6 innings, striking out 6, but had to take the loss on the mound, because all 4 runs scored by the Roughriders were courtesy of 3 Sheridan errors.

Head Coach Austin Cowen says it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but considering this was the first time since 2016 that the Troopers have played in the state championship game, the program is turning itself around in the right direction.

Sheridan finishes the 2025 season with a record of 45-27.

As for Gillette, it’s only their 3rd state championship in team history, but it was the first time the team has won a state championship away from Gillette.

The Roughriders now head to the Legion Baseball AA Northwest Regional Tournament, which starts on Wednesday in Billings, Montana.

The Wyoming champs will take on Alaska State Champ, Anchorage, in the first game of the day at 9:30am.

Some High School Fall Sports Start Practice In 1 Week: Now that baseball is over in Sheridan County, sports fans only have to wait 1 week before activity picks up elsewhere.

Practice for all 4A football teams, as well as all classes of golf and tennis starts 1 week from today.

Golfers can start competition as early as Wednesday, August 13th.

Tennis can start on Saturday the 16th.

As for 4A Football, the first game is on Friday, August 29th.

The 4-time defending state champion Sheridan Broncs will play the 4-home 5-away schedule this year.

The first game is at Cheyenne South, and the home opener is on Friday, September 5th vs. Thunder Basin.

All other classes of football, as well as all classes of volleyball, cross country and girls swimming can start practice 2 weeks from today, on August 18th.

Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies won 2 out of 3 games this past weekend at home vs. Pittsburgh.

On Friday, things did not get off to a good start as the Pirates scored 9 runs in the first inning, but the Rocks battled back and scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th to walk off with a 17-16 win.

Warming Bernabel hit a 3-run home run, while Yanquiel Fernandez provided a 2-run shot.

In the 9th, Hunter Goodman got the scoring started with a solo home run, and then Brenton Doyle ended it with a walk-off 2-run blast of his own to win it.

The Rockies kept the momentum going on Saturday winning 8-5.

Jordan Beck hit a 3-run shot and Orlando Arcia left the park on his own.

Colorado continued the home run barrage yesterday, but it wasn’t enough as the team lost 9-5.

Mickey Moniak, Goodman and Beck all went back-to-back-to-back of each other in the 6th inning.

With yesterday’s loss, the Rocks have now lost 81 games, meaning the team has to win all remaining 51 games in a row, just to finish the season with an even record.

The team starts a 3-game series at home today vs. Toronto.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm.
