A Sheridan student at the University of Wyoming has been awarded one of the nation’s most competitive academic honors.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, University of Wyoming Director of Internal Communications Chad Baldwin announced that four UW students have received the honor.

Baldwin said that Josephine Walton, a UW senior from Sheridan, majoring in biology and chemistry, has received a Graduate Research Fellowship from the NSF.

Walton’s research focuses on how microbial communities help organisms survive extreme environments, specifically studying how the tardigrade microbiome contributes to resilience during desiccation. She will begin a Ph.D. program this fall at UW in the lab of Thomas Boothby, a UW associate professor of molecular biology.

The fellowship includes three years of financial support, including an annual stipend and tuition assistance. Baldwin said that nationwide, nearly 14,000 students applied for the award, with only approximately 2,500 selected.
