The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call Monday morning from an individual who had found a firearm on the side of the road south of Kirby, Montana. Personnel with the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office and Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search of the area and found three handguns. A news release from the SCSO states that all three handguns are believed to be owned by 55-year-old Dana Beartusk. The handguns were turned over to Wyoming Law Enforcement for further processing.

Beartusk was charged with three counts of First Degree Murder for allegedly killing three family members in Big Horn during the evening hours of Sunday, March 29. Beartusk, shortly following the alleged murders, fled the scene and was later arrested in Montana. The firearm that was used to commit the crimes was not found in Beartusk’s possession when he was arrested.

Beartusk, at an arraignment hearing on April 30, pleaded “not guilty” to all three counts of First Degree Murder. The week-long jury trial is scheduled to begin on September 28. Beartusk is being held at the Sheridan County Detention Center on a $750,000 cash only bond. Each count of First Degree Murder is punishable by death, life in prison without parole, or life in prison according to law.
