The University of Wyoming’s Wyoming Motorsports student organization captured its second consecutive SAE Formula Hybrid + Electric championship during competition in Loudon, N.H.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, UW Director of Internal Communications Chad Baldwin said the team is not a formalized team in UW athletics, but a student driven UW club that works to raise their own funds, build their own vehicles and compete on their own.

According to UW, the team earned the title after improving its race car with a lighter engine, increased power, enhanced aerodynamics, a redesigned steering system and a more effective clutch. Despite overcoming a mechanical setback during the competition, students secured a replacement part and completed the event.

In a UW news release, the team members said the hands-on experience provides valuable engineering, fabrication and project management skills. Wyoming Motorsports will next compete in its first SAE Baja Competition in Ohio this coming Fall.

Baldwin said the students of Wyoming Motorsports have worked hard to secure their own sponsorships which include Snaptron, 9H Research Foundation, Associated Students of UW, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Gene Haas Foundation, Enepaq, FRPC, Easy Composites, Monster Energy Drinks, Hitchcock Incorporated, Polaris and Rekluse.
