Sheridan Memorial Hospital will soon open “The Path” to its new behavioral health center.

The Hospital held a public open house on Wednesday June 24th, for The Path Behavioral Health Center, located on the west side of the main hospital building.

Brittany Goodvin is the hospital’s Director Of Behavioral Health.

She says many people across the country who have a mental health situation, have used hospital emergency rooms as a resort, but when there’s an increase in the number of patients, that can make it difficult for hospital staff to treat those who need medical attention.

“In general those emergency rooms aren’t really designed to really accommodate a mental health crisis and in terms of just the physical environment, clinical staff do a great job, but that’s not truly their focus and so being able to optimize the empath model delivery of care, which really focuses on putting patients in the right environment with the right specialty to give really more time to be able to work through that crisis has really shown great results across the country and we’re excited to bring that model here to Sheridan.”

Goodvin adds the goal of the new unit is to reduce involuntary commitment by 50% and so far that percentage is already at 24.

The behavioral health center will undergo a phased opening process.

The plan is to have the psychiatric clinic moved in next month, and open the adult crisis stabilization unit later this summer.

The inpatient unit is anticipated to open later this year.
