Local residents who live and/or have business to conduct within a section of road that’s closed, can sometimes get permission to enter the closed area, provided the area of highway they need to get to is good enough for them to travel.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation says when a road is closed, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the entire section of road is bad, but motorists can’t just go up to the bad section and wait for that section of road to be cleared, because that could create more problems.

WYDOT has what’s called a travel authorization program which permits certain pre-approved motorists to drive on sections of closed roads, when authorities deem it safe to do so.

WYDOT Assistant Chief Engineer for Operations Tom DeHoff explains who might be authorized to enter a closed section of roadway.

“The program was set up to allow locals to get to medical appointments, to feed livestock, to pick up kids from school, or even to get to work. This program allows them to do that, as long as it’s safe to travel.”
