The Museum at the Bighorns will host a free flint knapping demonstration with local flint knapper Rick Laurent from 2 – 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, on the porch of the Museum at the Bighorns. Laurent’s main talk will begin at 2 p.m., but visitors can come and go as they wish.

According to Collections Manager for the Museum at the Bighorns, Jessica Salzman, a number of people reached out to the museum saying they enjoyed the demonstration that Laurent gave at the museum in July; the museum has asked him to talk and perform another demonstration.

According to the museum, Laurent worked for the US Forest Service for more than 25 years and retired as an archeologist. He has a degree in anthropology from the University of Wyoming. It was while working with colleagues that he learned the skill of flint knapping. After long days in the field doing anthropology and archaeology work, the crews would gather around a fire to relax. Laurent loves the anthropology component and also the aesthetics of flint knapping, Salzman said.
