James M. Moses passed away on January 31, 2026, in Sheridan, Wyoming. He spent his final months being cared for by the wonderful staff of Busy Bees and The Green House Living.

Jim was born on April 22, 1939, to James C. and Marion Moses in Wolf Point, Montana. He graduated from Wolf Point High School and married his high school sweetheart, June. Together they had two sons, Michael and Jeffrey. He was drafted into the Army, serving in the Intelligence Division during the Korean Conflict.

Jim worked his way through college and graduated from the University of Denver. He began his long banking career in Laramie, Wyoming, with Capital Savings and Loan. He later moved to Cheyenne with Wyoming State Bank, which became Key Bank. While in Cheyenne, he met and married Barbara Harrison Sundahl. He was transferred to the Denver branch to build the real estate division, and later to Cody, Wyoming, to lead the Cody, Powell, and Meeteetse banks through a transition of new ownership. He was then asked to move to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, to start a new bank, overseeing everything from securing a new charter and staffing to operating from a temporary facility and designing and constructing a permanent bank building. Upon completion, First Interstate Bank asked him to build the Jackson branch, beginning his deep connection to and service within the Jackson Hole community.

When Jim arrived in Jackson, First Interstate Bank operated as a small kiosk in a grocery store with only two employees. He recruited staff, secured workspace, and acquired land for a new building. Understanding the community’s housing challenges, he developed a program to assist employees with housing and incorporated apartments into the new bank building. He became actively involved with the Jackson Hole Community Housing Trust and assisted in financing many affordable housing projects for teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and working families.

With the backing of the First Interstate Bank Foundation, Jim helped bring the Center for the Arts in Jackson to life and served on its board of directors until 2016. He also served as both board member and president of the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole and supported numerous nonprofit boards whenever assistance was needed. In 2008, the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce named Jim “Citizen of the Year.”

He was a proud mentor and supporter of the Teton County women who founded Womentum. After retiring from First Interstate, Jim and a group of investors assumed control of a financially defaulted Rocky Mountain Bank. As President, and alongside investors who recapitalized the bank, he successfully restored it within a year, working closely with employees and the existing board. His care for employees and dedication to community were evident throughout his career.

In 2018, Jim retired from banking, and he and Bobbi moved to Palm Desert to enjoy winters with their granddaughters and warm desert walks. They spent summers in Sheridan, Wyoming, helping care for his mother-in-law during her final years. In 2023, they made Sheridan their permanent home.

Outside of work, Jim’s passions were motorcycles and cars. He meticulously researched every vehicle he purchased, sometimes rebuilding vintage bikes and always enhancing them with thoughtful additions. Holidays and weekends were often spent riding motorcycles across back roads throughout the United States and Canada. After moving to Jackson, he transitioned from motorcycles to sports cars, citing the lack of nearby racetracks to practice riding skills. He took exceptional care of each vehicle, ensuring it was always ready for its next owner when he set out on a new adventure.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marion Moses; his brother, Fritz; his son, Michael; and his grandson, Derek.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara; his brother, Timothy (Joanne); his son, Jeff (Kelly); stepsons Charles Sundahl (Mia) and James Sundahl (Lacy); grandchildren Jessica Schmidt, Jazmin Sundahl, and Kaylee Sundahl; great-granddaughter Caroline Schmidt; nieces Alita Moses, Stacey, and Clair; and nephews Chris and Oliver Moses.

The family asks that memorials be directed to the Jackson Hole Community Housing Trust, Womentum of Jackson Hole, and the Sheridan Memorial Hospital Foundation.
