John Alvin Elkins III, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend, passed away with the comfort of his family on June 28, 2026. He was born on July 1, 1947, in Sheridan, Wyoming, the town he proudly called home throughout his life.

John graduated from Sheridan High School in 1965 before answering the call to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He went on to serve his community as a police officer, business owner, and chaplain, living a life defined by integrity, faith, and compassion.

Of all the titles he held, none meant more than being the “Bum” to his “Woof” and the Dad and Papa to his family. For 58 years, he shared an extraordinary love story with his wife, Nancy. Together they built a home filled with laughter, unwavering commitment, and countless memories, creating the roots of a family that continues to grow.

He was proudly Dad to 5 children and Papa to 15 grandchildren and 6 (almost 7) great grandchildren. His greatest joy was simply being with his family around the campfire at the family cabin in the Bighorn Mountains, gathered at home for celebrations, or sharing laughter over a game. A true card shark, he loved a little friendly competition and was never shy about reminding everyone how to play the game, or keep score correctly.

Later in life, his three long-haired Chihuahuas became his “babies.” Their loyal companionship brought him endless joy, and they rarely left his side.

An outdoorsman, John loved hunting, fishing, and camping in the Bighorn Mountains. His days were filled with the dreams of his next hunting trip with those he loved.

John never met a stranger. He seemed to know everyone in town, and if he didn’t, it wouldn’t take long before they became friends. He never missed a chance to brag about his family, and his stories, humor, and playful teasing made everyone around him feel like an old friend.

John was preceded in death by his beloved son, John; his cherished grandson, Evan John, with whom he shared a birthday; his parents, Jack and Darlene; and many dear friends who welcomed him home.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Nancy; his brother, Jerry; his daughters, Alyssa (Randy), Kimberly, Heather (Chris), and Selina (Todd); his grandchildren, Derrick, Cody, Cole (Kelsie), Chris, Kelsi (Jake), Cody, Brandon (Chelsea), Courtney, Jace, Remington (Tayler), Cade (Taylor), Colt, Ashlynn (Levi), and Tawni; his great-grandchildren, Myles, Violet, Rowan John, Jensen, Luke, and Hazel; and countless extended family members and friends.

John’s legacy lives on in the family he adored, the people he served, and the countless lives he touched with his generosity, humor, and steadfast love. Though he will be deeply missed, his stories, laughter, and example will continue on.

A Celebration of Life Open House will be held at the Lucille Alley Room in the Dayton Town Hall, 608 Broadway Dayton, WY, on July 10, 2026, from 3:00–5:00 p.m., with Military Honors at 4:00 p.m. John’s favorite meal will be served, and the family invites guests to wear something patriotic in his honor.
