Mary Virginia Hutton

Mary Virginia Hutton, 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the Green House Living in Sheridan, WY.

Mary was born in Sheridan, Wyoming on December 1, 1929, the daughter of Charles and Bertha Scrutchfield, who were also Sheridan, Wyoming natives.  The family ranched on Badger Creek in their early years before purchasing the ranch on Lower Prairie Dog Creek in the 1940s.  Mary grew up in the family home on Big Horn Avenue and attended Sheridan schools graduating in 1948.  Winters were spent at the home on Big Horn Avenue while summers were spent on the family ranches.  She also attended the University of Wyoming, majoring in home economics.

She married Malcolm Burns Hutton in 1951 when the two decided to elope to Estes Park.  The couple raised four boys, first at their home in Sheridan before moving to their dream home on Prairie Dog Creek.  While Malcolm and the boys worked the ranch, Mary worked harder at taking care of the family.  With her son, Randy, injured in a car accident, her job as a caretaker became more intense and would be her focus for the next 40 years.  The couple spent many years between their homes in Sheridan and Denver to be close to son, Randy, eventually returning to Sheridan in later years.  At this point Mary reunited with many old friends and continued those relationships until her death.

Mary was most fond of cooking, especially for her family, playing cards and enjoying her social life. She taught every generation how to cook her special homemade noodles.  She cherished her family and was often found playing double solitaire games with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she personally taught to play.  They all still love it today.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Malcolm, her son Randy, her brother, Leroy Scrutchfield, sister, Stella Barker and nephews, Dick and David Scrutchfield.  She is survived by her sons, Gary (Patricia) Hutton of Littleton, CO, Craig (Charleen) Hutton of Sheridan, WY, Chuck (Jeannie) Hutton of Sheridan, WY, five grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, nephew, Russell Bessette and niece, Robby Barker Smith.
