Jimmy J. Gilliland
Jimmy (James) J. Gilliland, born April 10, 1951, passed away on June 26, 2026. Jimmy was the beloved son of James E. and Sally Gilliland, and his life was deeply rooted in the strong values he learned growing up in Birney, Montana.
Jimmy spent his lifetime working the land and mastering skills that reflected both his character and his upbringing. He was a talented welder, a hardworking rancher, and a skilled fencer—trades he took pride in throughout his life. His work ethic was matched only by the loyalty and care he showed to the people around him. He cherished relationships, valued his neighbors, and never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone in need. He loved baking and cooking for people, especially at large gatherings, and took great interest in cooking and sausage making.
Jimmy was also known for his strong love of storytelling. Whether sharing memories from his younger years, recounting adventures from the ranch, or spinning humorous tales that grew better with each telling, he had a way of bringing people together through his stories. Those moments—filled with warmth, laughter, and connection—became treasured parts of time spent with him.
Jimmy married the love of his life, Kayleen Gilliland, in January 1974, and together they built a family grounded in love, resilience, and connection. He is survived by his children Henry (Oaklee) Gilliland, and their son Riley with another little one on the way; his daughter Kerri (Buck) Williamson; and his son Mark Gilliland. He is also survived by his sister, Susan Anderson; his niece Jenny (Brock) Boedecker; and his nephew Tyler (Lacie) Anderson. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Jimmy embraced the outdoors and the Montana way of life. He spent countless hours hunting, trapping, and calling coyotes—activities that brought him peace, challenge, and a deep connection to the land he loved. Those who knew him will always remember his steady presence, quiet strength, and genuine care for others.
Jimmy’s legacy lives on in the stories shared, the lessons passed down, and the love he poured into his family and community. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, at the Birney Cemetery in Birney, MT. A celebration of life will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Kendrick Park in Sheridan, WY.
