Sheridan Media reporter Pat Blair looks back in time, over 100 years ago, to the impact of Spanish influenza as reported in the pages of the Sheridan Enterprise in 1918.

A Sheridan Enterprise reporter concludes on Oct. 5 that it isn’t easy to discover why such stress was laid on the designation of “Spanish influenza” for the ailment that had then become epidemic in many eastern states.

Medical men in Sheridan are declaring that Spanish influenza isn’t different from ordinary influenza. At least one Sheridan physician asserts that the sickness, in fact, has already reached Sheridan.

Across the east, especially around soldier camps, a big scare is on over the prevalence of Spanish influenza.

An epidemic of Spanish influenza at Basin has prevented the convocation of the grand encampment and grand lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows and the Rebekah Assembly. News reached Sheridan today in time to stop the local Odd Fellows delegation from boarding a train to the event.
