Senator Kinskey on How to Fix School Deficit Problems

Published

on

In an earlier Sheridan Media story, State Senator Dave Kinskey (R-Sheridan, Johnson Counties) discussed a looming problem with th e state’s budget related to spending on education.

With better than two-thirds of Wyoming’s tax revenue and its economy dependent on coal, oil, and natural gas tax revenues that are declining rapidly, Governor Mark Gordon has cut state spending again in his budget by a half a billion dollars.

Kinskey said education needs to be brought to the table to try to slow the growth of spending on education.

Kinskey shared some of the ideas lawmakers are contemplating regarding education funding in the near future, with the main priority being protecting the classroom.

Everything else, he said, is fair game including administrative overhead, combining of school districts, or cutting sports and/or activities.

He highlighted one option that is being considered by some in the

legislature.

Kinskey said lawmakers need to find a solution that is a midway solution that threads the needle with a little bit of both cuts and finding funding sources.
