Eric Lofgren took the oath of office as the newest trustee of Sheridan County School District 1 in a special meeting of the district Friday.

In other action during the meeting conducted via internet and telephone, trustees heard updates on the COVID-19 virus from District Superintendent Pete Kilbride and approved a resolution recommended by the Wyoming School Board Association to grant Kilbride temporary emergency power to act without first consulting trustees during the COVID-19 situation.

Trustees Chair Carol Garber explained.

Kilbride briefed trustees on a meeting held Friday morning among County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hunter and the superintendents and assistant superintendents of all three Sheridan County school districts.

He said Dr. Hunter reported at that time there were a total 55 cases of COVID-19 in 12 of Wyoming’s 23 counties.

Kilbride said as of now, the plans were that students would return to school on April 6, but everyone is waiting on word from Governor Mark Gordon.

Kilbride also updated trustees on the district’s food program, which started Tuesday with the district giving out sack lunches to students at five locations in the district. He said the district on Tuesday gave lunches to 150 students.

That number went to nearly 190 on Wednesday, and on Thursday, the district fed 260 students. He said there was no total for Friday by the time of the trustees’ meeting.
