The Sheridan Memorial Hospital will soon get started on the actual physical work of its new Behavioral Health and Crisis Stabilization Unit.

Recently the Hospital’s Board of Trustees approved an $8.1-plus million bid from O’Dell Construction, to construct the unit on the south side of the hospital building, where some of the surgical and medical beds used to be, before they were moved to where the pediatrics unit is.

The hospital says that move is still in progress and should be done early next year for construction work to start on the unit.

Hospital CEO Mike McCafferty says the hospital is already trying to get started on offering behavioral health services before the actual physical work on the unit is completed.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work obviously, a lot of planning work, we have some things in place. Starting to build the clinical infrastructure. We’ve hired a psychiatrist, Dr. Michael Kinney and we have some other folks that we’re going to start providing some services in the outpatient setting here later this fall and winter and into 2025. We’re starting to not only build the physical infrastructure, but the people part of it as well.”

Funding for the construction work came from the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the Sheridan County Commissioners and ARPA funding awarded via the Wyoming State Loan and Investment Board.

McCafferty adds he anticipates construction work to be finished sometime in 2026.
