Storm watchers needed: Free SKYWARN Training 

Sheridan County Emergency Management Coordinator Jesse Ludikhuize is inviting the public to a free SKYWARN training. 

Thunderstorms, tornadoes and lightning cause hundreds of injuries and deaths as well as billions of dollars in property and crop damages.  

To obtain critical weather information, the National Weather Service (NWS) established SKYWARN with partner organizations. SKYWARN is a volunteer program with between 350,000 and 400,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the NWS.

In partnership with the NWS, Ludikhuize is seeking local Sheridan County residents to join the team of weather spotters. A free SKYWARN training will begin at 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Sheridan Area Search and Rescue located at 916 W. Brundage Ln. in Sheridan. 

Attendees will learn about thunderstorm basics, how to identify potential severe weather, storm structure, the damage that severe hail, wind, flooding and tornados can cause as well as how to report this information.
