Mayor Urges E-bike Riders to Play by the Rules of the Road

Buffalo Mayor Shane Schrader is encouraging e-bike riders to follow the rules of the road as the devices continue to grow in popularity. 

Schrader, who also works as an EMT, said he has responded to accidents involving e-bikes and has concerns about riders operating on downtown sidewalks and ignoring traffic laws. While Buffalo already prohibits bicycles and skateboards on downtown sidewalks, city officials have discussed whether additional measures may be needed. 

Schrader said public education remains the preferred approach for now and anecdotally, has seen a reduction in the number of e-bike users on city sidewalks.

The Mayor reminded riders to obey traffic signs and signals, ride predictably and wear approved helmets to reduce the risk of serious injury.
