Kermit Pershing Sweeny, Jr., was born on July 28, 1951, to Ella Marie (Langschwager) Sweeny and Kermit Pershing Sweeny, Sr., in Edgewood, Maryland.  He passed peacefully at home on February 26, 2026.

Kermit grew up in a military home and traveled abroad as a child to Germany and Italy during his father’s career in the Army.  The family settled in Savanna, Illinois and later in Clinton, Iowa.  Kermit was a gifted athlete with many accolades throughout his ball-playing career, a teacher, coach, athletic director and mentor at Ten Sleep School for over 30 years until his retirement in 2010.  While at Ten Sleep School, Kermit’s basketball and track teams won numerous State championships, and he was honored on the national level for his success in the track program, as well as brought 6-man football to Ten Sleep.  In his retirement, he coached Worland High School Basketball and then at Riverside High School.  Upon retiring from coaching and teaching, Kermit went to work at Wyoming Whiskey from 2012 until 2016, when he retired again to work for his wife’s law practice.  In 2019, Kermit and Wendy moved over to Sheridan to be closer to his children and grandchildren, a move that enriched his life and allowed for him to be completely retired.

He loved hunting and being in the Big Horn Mountains, golfing, playing board and card games, watching his children and grandchildren in their sports and activities, as well as spending time with his children, grandchildren, friends that he made throughout the State, his golf buddies, and his beloved Golden Retrievers.  He touched so many lives over the years and was a mentor to a great many of his students, athletes, and colleagues.  He cherished his time with the Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation, serving on the University of Wyoming Alumni Board, and volunteering in the community and State of Wyoming.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy Sweeny, and his children, Richard Sweeny (Whitney) of Sheridan, Wyoming; Michael Sweeny of Worland, Wyoming; Nicholas Sweeny (Lainie) of Sheridan, Wyoming; and Briana Sweeny Niemann (Kyle) of Charleston, South Carolina, as well as grandchildren Olivia Sweeny, Jenna Sweeny, Jaxon Sweeny, Baylor Sweeny, Annabelle Niemann and Caroline Niemann.  He is also survived by his especially dear sister, Sandra Kay Hartman (Allan) of Clinton, Iowa. And his nephew, Jeffery Marr (Pamela) and their children, of Indianapolis, Indiana.  He also leaves behind Dr. Watson and Bogart, his faithful companions.

Kermit was preceded in death by his parents, and numerous aunts and uncles.
