Sheryl Sowers

A celebration of the life of Sheryl Sowers, 62-year-old Buffalo resident who passed away at the Johnson County Healthcare Center in Buffalo on Monday, August 24th, will be held on Friday, September 4th, starting at 5 p.m. at the Century Club in Buffalo.

Sheryl Ann Sowers was born on December 30th, 1963, in Rochester, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Sally Sowers. She grew up and went to school in Fontana, California, and attended Fontana High School. After high school in California, she worked primarily in the food service industry. One of her most memorable jobs was for a company that supplied food to airlines. In that capacity, she cooked for the Los Angeles Lakers and made special treats for celebrities.

In 1990, Cheryl and her brother Scott decided that they were done with the smog, traffic, and big cities of California and set out to find a better life elsewhere. Upon the advice of an uncle, they chose to move to Wyoming. After a year in Casper, they attended a rodeo in Buffalo and loved it here. They decided to make Buffalo their permanent home.

Sheryl worked at the Johnson County Courthouse for over 20 years, the last of which she supervised the janitorial services. She later worked as a cook in the kitchen of the Johnson County Healthcare Center. Sheryl was passionate about the environment. She became a founder of the Buffalo Recycling Center and served as president of their board.

Her other passion was growing tomatoes and preserving them for her tasty sauces. Her friends often teased her about the aversion to waste. As a lover of words, Sheryl delighted in solving crossword puzzles, especially the New York Times Sunday crossword. She prided herself in not having to turn to the solution.

She was cherished by her many friends and beloved by her family. She had a special rapport with her niece, Mindy, and nephew Frank Jr., who always called her best buddy rather than aunt. She will be affectionately remembered driving around town in her red Jeep, caring for her various dogs, blowing bubbles, and flying kites while picnicking on the mountain and making people laugh at her corny jokes.

She is survived by her sister, Amy Miranda of Buffalo, brother Scott Sowers, and nephew Frank Miranda Jr., also of Buffalo, and her many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and niece Mindy Miranda Lewis. Donations in Cheryl’s memory may be made to the St. Francis Animal Shelter at 109 Flatiron Drive in Buffalo, Wyoming, 82834.
