Museum at the Bighorns Announces Phase One

On June 4, Museum at the Bighorns announced Phase 1 of their relocation/ expansion project opening to the public Thursday, June 12th. Phase 1 of the museum site includes the main entrance and retail store of the 171 N. Main Street site. The museum staff and board of directors are excited to share this progress with the community and thanks previous board members and many volunteers over the years for their service and dedication to preserving our local and regional history and establishing the museum.

In January of 2025, the museum building located on 5th Street was sold and the 2025 relocation and expansion at 171 North Main Street, which is the old Woolworths building, continued. With the temporary closure from the relocation and expansion of the museum, Carrie Ida Edinger, Museum Director has organized some ways you can see selected pieces of the museum’s collection and partake in upcoming events combining history, art and other hands-on activities. There will be four themed hands-on activities during Downtown Sheridan’s 3rd Thursdays Festival this summer.

In addition, there will be a summer exhibit displayed in the Phase 1 section of the museum about the history of 171 N. Main Street. The history of the site ranges from a brick building that was built in 1888 for the newly formed Sheridan County government to the mid-1960s, with the current building being the Woolworth retail store. We invite community members who have a memory of the Woolworth retail store to come visit the exhibit and share their memory by including it in the exhibit display.

As the Museum of the Bighorns keeps making progress with their expansion project, community members and visitors to Sheridan can visit the museum website museumbighorns.org for updated-to-date information and summer hours of operation.
