Many areas in North-Central Wyoming have reported more snowfall this winter season compared to last, and the first snowpack numbers of the season are right around where they should be.

The US Department of Agriculture has released its first monthly snowpack report for the 2024-2025 winter season

Snowpack data is collected at remote sites that transmit real-time snow-water content and precipitation data via a satellite link many times throughout the month.

The data is also collected once a month manually, at the end of each month from late January to late April.

As of February 1st, manual snowpack numbers at the Tongue River Drainage area is at 99% compared to the 30-year average, while the Clear Creek Drainage area is at about 63%.

The latter is part of the Powder River Drainage area and that is at about 91%.

Andrew Cassiday is the District Conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service.

He says most of the reports come from the mountain areas, and the numbers don’t necessarily represent the lower elevations, particularly in eastern Sheridan and Johnson Counties.

“They got some snow, could always stand for more moisture. We were terribly dry last summer and into the fall, so we got some ground to make up and so hopefully it stays and pray for rain this spring.”
