More Covered Wagon Tour Dates Offered at Fort Phil Kearny

Ashlee Kintzler, Moon Hitch Covered Wagon tours, announced that there are still a few seats left on their 6:00 p.m. slot on Sunday, August 9, Wagon Tour at Fort Phil Kearny. Sales end soon, so hurry if you want a seat on this tour.

These wagon rides give one an opportunity to take a step back in time and explore Fort Phil Kearny from the seat of a covered wagon as the knowledgeable guides bring history to life.

Sharie Shada, Site Superintendent, said she had received positive feedback from those who had taken the wagon tour.

The two black horses that pull the wagon are owned by the fort, and they are Morgan-Percheron crosses. “They are trained to pull, and they love having a job to do. They are enjoying themselves.” Shada said.

As our wagon rolls across the historic grounds, Shada and the other guides will bring the people, struggles, and stories buried beneath this soil back to life. Nestled at the foot of Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains, Fort Phil Kearny was once the largest and most heavily defended fort on the Bozeman Trail. Built from more than 4,000 logs and sprawling across 17 acres, the post stood at the center of a turbulent chapter in Western history.

Known to Native tribes as the “hated post on the Little Piney,” the fort became a focal point of Red Cloud’s War and witnessed some of the most significant conflicts of the Indian Wars, including the Fetterman Fight and Wagon Box Fight
