The Sheridan Police Department will be conducting a Citizen’s Police Academy beginning on August 16.

This year the Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA) will be one week long, with sessions being held each evening. The CPA is a program designed to familiarize community members with department operations.

The CPA also offers the SPD a chance to open their doors to the public, according to Lieutenant James Hill.

Sessions will begin at 6 p.m. and run through 8 p.m. with each session covering three to four topics. For five days, participants will learn through lectures, demonstrations, and discussions about various police functions. The CPA will cover the whole range of Sheridan Police Department functions from law enforcement philosophy to operations. Specialty SPD functions such as K9, School Resource Officer, and detectives will also be discussed.

The CPA is open to residents interested in learning more about the department. Participants should be over the age of 16 and be able to commit to attending at least four of the five sessions.

The SPD will check past law enforcement contacts and criminal conduct. There will be no physical requirements or restraints that prevent any member of the community from attending the CPA, according to SPD Lieutenant Danny Keller.
