Sheridan High School graduation will be later than usual this year. Ceremonies would have been on May 24, but because of COVID-19 restrictions, Craig Dougherty said the ceremony probably would have been virtual.

Instead, Dougherty said, the plan is to hold the ceremonies on June 14 so they can be in-person.

Dougherty, who is superintendent of Sheridan County School District 2, which operates Sheridan High School and the John C. Schiffer Collaborative School, said the decision is the result of a survey of high school students and their families.

Dougherty said even in June, those allowed to attend the event will be smaller than in years past, and social distancing may still be required.

But he said as much as possible, the district would like to accommodate students’ wishes. He said graduation is their event, their moment, and a moment to their families.

He said the graduation ceremony for John C. Schiffer Collaborative School – which is the district’s alternative school – is a much smaller event, so the district plans on holding the event at the regular time, on May 23. He said the ceremony will be held outdoors.

Dougherty said graduation plans for both high schools still need to be approved by county and state health officials.
