Many residents and visitors have visited Fort Phil Kearny and learned about the daily life of soldiers and their families stationed there, but many people have not heard some of the grisly tales concerning disease, Red Cloud’s War and the accidents that happened in the isolated area.
Full Moon Fort is a program operated by the Fort Phil Kearny Historic Site that takes people on guided lantern tours through the fort grounds. Patrons will hear about the crippling isolation, deadly infection and surrounding threats in the area from actors portraying historical characters. Events and context of the circumstances were the grim reality of life in a fort on the frontier.
This year the tours will take place a little earlier than last year. On the evenings of Sept. 29 and 30. While appearing on Sheridan Meida’s Public Pulse, State Historic Sites Superintendent Sharie Shada shared her reasons for the change.
Cost is $10 per person for ages 12 and up. Reservations are required. Visitors ages 11 and under are free, but do require a ticket.
All visitors are reminded to dress warmly for the outdoor tours. In cases of dangerously cold or wet conditions, the event will be canceled.
Tours available at this time are Sept 29 – 7 p.m.; 7:30; 9 and 9:30 p.m. And on Sept. 30, an additional tour will be added to the schedule, 7 p.m.; 7:30; 8 p.m.; 8:30; 9 p.m. and 9:30.
Staff are asking that patrons please be sure to check in at the Fort Phil Kearny Interpretive Center 15 minutes prior to tour start time to receive a wristband. Confirmation will be emailed and confirmed on the reservation list.
