When the western states were being settled, medical doctors were somewhat rare. A small rural town may not have a doctor at all while larger towns may have had only one or two. This created the family doctor. A trained medical professional who cared for most if not all members of a community. These doctors often cared for multiple generations of family members.
The practice of medicine has come a long way since the days of the gladstone black bag and horse buggy. Experts in their respective fields have advanced every specialty of the medical practice, saving and prolonging countless lives. Each provides specialized essential care to members of their community.
Often, patients may not require the professional knowledge and expertise of a doctor within a specialized field and families still desire the care and trust of a family doctor. Sheridan Memorial Hospital has recently opened the Primary Care practice to act as a gateway to further care if needed and provide that desired level of trust many people develop with a family doctor.
According to SMH, the Primary Care practice is the initial point of contact for patients of all ages dealing with non-emergent medical needs. Primary care helps create healthy habits and offers preventative strategies.
While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Sheridan Memorial Hospital Primary Care Dr. Kristopher Schamber, informed listeners on the differences between primary care and internal medicine.
Family Medicine Primary Care, Dr. Erica Rinker told listeners that developing relationships and trust is vital between a doctor and their patients. The Primary Care practice wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated professionals at each level of the medical system SMH has and been awarded for employing.
The Primary Care practice is now open and located in downtown Sheridan at 61 South Gould St. To learn more, click here.
