A member of Wyoming’s inaugural class of state girls wrestling champions from Sheridan HS, will continue to compete at a college that’s had some national success.
Senior Becca Oetken has signed a written offer of athletic aid to compete at North Central College, located in Naperville, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago.
She is a 2-time Wyoming High School State Champ (undefeated season as a junior), and a 2024 High School All-American in Folkstyle wrestling.
Oetken says college uses the Freestyle format, which is a little bit different and has already been preparing for it with her coaches.
“I’ve been training over the summer with Marcie (Lane) and Mark on freestyle training, so they’ve been preparing me in that way so that I’m ready to go and ready to compete. I think it will definitely be a lot more intense than high school wrestling and the team will be bigger, but I think all the changes are going to be great changes and I’m really looking forward to it. I think they saw potential in me, because I’m obviously not #1 in the country yet, but they see that I have potential to be there some day.”
Oetken says she is considering a major in health sciences.
The North Central College Women’s Wrestling Team won the 2023 National Championship, and is the 2024 National Runner-Up behind the University of Iowa.

It’s more like Chicago is a suburb of Naperville these days.
