The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has received word of multiple bear conflicts in recent weeks.

Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to urge residents  to secure all attractants on the exterior of their properties.

Sheridan County is within bear habitat. Taking precautions and preparing for bears to be in the area is a yearly event especially for communities near National Forest.

Placing garbage and other food rewards that bears seek out into hard-sided buildings is one way to prepare. Game and Fish suggest moving dog and cat foods, BBQ grills and any other food related materials, such as other animal feeds, indoors. Vegetable and flower gardens also attract bears. Gardens should be located away from forests or shrubs, which bears use for security and travel. Bears will dig up carrots and bulbs, so electric fencing is a good idea.

Schmidt also reminded the public to please report any conflicts immediately. This allows for more management options. You can call the regional office during regular business hours or the Stop Poaching Hotline 24 hours a day at 877-WGFD-TIP.
