An arraignment hearing was held Thursday for a Sheridan man charged with multiple crimes. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has more.

On October 7, 41-year-old Chancy Haux was arrested by the Sheridan Police Department for illegally being in possession of an AR-15 rifle. At an arraignment hearing Thursday, Haux pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness or deficiency to the alleged charges of possession of a firearm by a violent felon and interference with an emergency call. Haux was previously convicted of two violent felonies in Washakie County. District Court Judge Darci Phillips ordered that a mental health evaluation be completed by the Wyoming State Hospital.

Judge Phillips scheduled a three-day jury trial to begin on March 9 and set a pretrial conference date for February 5 at 10:30 am. Haux’s bond was continued under the same terms and conditions that were previously set in Sheridan County Circuit Court. The possession of a firearm by a violent felon is a felony punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. The interference charge is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $750.

If someone pleads not guilty by reason of mental illness, bond should NOT be continued. Two prior violent felonies and they are now claiming mental illness? This person doesn’t need to be open to the public until after evaluation.

Absolutely! Sick of repeat offenders allowed any amount of bond. I believe many individuals could of had a real chance of rehabilitation if harsher sentencing was imposed right off the bat.
