Proposed Senior Citizen District Discussed
Senior citizens are a big part of Sheridan County’s population, and there are many services for seniors in the area, such as Meals on Wheels; Daybreak which is adult day care, and transportation in the Sheridan area are provided by The Hub on Smith.
While the Hub contributes a great deal to the health and well-being of seniors, Dustin Stephens Executive Director at The Hub and Bryn Stewart, president of the Hub board, talked to the community about a Proposed Senior Citizen Service District for the area.
Community input was encouraged at several meetings in Sheridan and the surrounding area, and there will be a final meeting tonight, August 6, at the Big Horn Women’s Club building in Big Horn at 6 p.m.
Stewart explains what the proposed service district that will be on ballot on August 18. Whether or not the district comes into being will depend on the voters.
He mentioned the other counties and towns that have districts like the one proposed for Sheridan. Some of the districts run the senior centers, some are separate from the district. He said it would be similar to a fire district or a school district.
He talked about possibly providing bus service from the UCLA corridor to Sheridan for people to ride to go shopping, or doctor appointments.
Dustin Stephens, who has been executive director of the Hub since November, said working there has been a ‘wonderful’ journey so far. He added.
He said that there was a suggested contribution for the meals, but no one is turned away because they can not pay.
The money would be raised by a mill levy, not more than two mills. The money could only be used for seniors in the area. This would be added to the property tax bill, and Bryn said that one mill would add approximately $40 to a resident’s property tax bill. This funding would be voted on every four years, it would not be permanent.
There will be another community meeting tonight, August 6, at 6 p.m. at the Big Horn Women’s Club, all are welcome to attend and give their input on the proposed senior citizen district to provide services for the seniors in our communities.

Yes, Sheridan is a great place for seniors to live and I am very happy to be here, but there are a few things that I don’t think the younger generation has even thought about. I am 93 years old and still able to do things on my own. So my car license plates are due in August and I got the notice in the mail. I always go to the courthouse, but I have to park in their parking lot and then walk to the entrance of the basement and then down the hall, which is quite a long walk for a senior citizen. I could mail in the card. There is an extra dollar 47 charge plus the postage stamp to do that. I do have an iPhone and there is a place I could have paid online but I am always nervous about doing that. So I mailed in my check. Then I received my city bill drove over to the city hall and there’s that lovely bunch of steps to get into City Hall not doing that either so I mailed that bill another stamp, then I realized I’m running low on stamps drove around to the post office. No place to park! I know there’s another place out at Sugarland, but I like to buy commemorative stamps and they don’t sell those out there my daughter informed me I can buy stamps through the mail which I guess I will do. Once you become a senior citizen, your world changes and it’s very hard to keep up with what is going on.

Do you want your property taxes to go UP?
-Yes.
-No.
It doesn’t matter if it’s for seniors, juniors, or to buy lollipops and puppies for everyone.
It’s not about some concocted “need” it’s about the funding method of Forced-taxation that we vehemently object to.
Raising taxes on every property in ALL of Sheridan County, to hand it over to gov’t boards and politicians, to then re-distribute to other private “board-heavy” private entities is dumber than dirt.
Just leave the money in our pockets and we’ll figure it out.
Raising takes right now is the LAST thing we need.
Especially right now when 80 year-old’s are being forced to go back to work just to pay taxes.
Enough already.
Vote NO on the Tax Hike.

It’s telling that the people shilling for this property tax increase stand to benefit directly from the tax hike.
They are already getting paid by our tax-dollars and are stumping for even more of our money, thru forced-taxation.
Nice little socialist scam they got going on.
It’s just another tax hike masked as a way to “help” seniors.
The people know the truth and the truth is:

Interesting that all of these meetings were presented on the same day. A day when I, and I’m sure many others, were out of town.
If this passes, we are stuck with it forever, and the mil increases will continue with no end in sight.

You are correct sir. That’s why we need to tell everyone that the property tax hike scam must be defeated in the primary.
Aug 18 is our only chance to STOP this TAX HIKE.

Raising taxes on seniors does not help them. It only hurts.
Lower taxes are always better.
