Casper Regional Office to Offer CWD Training

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is inviting hunters to get ready for the upcoming hunting season with hands-on training from Game and Fish wildlife professionals. 

Beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the Casper Regional Office, Game and Fish personnel will give instruction on chronic wasting disease (CWD) and how to properly locate, extract, preserve, and submit lymph nodes from harvested deer and elk for CWD testing.

Wildlife Professionals will teach:

History and ecology of the disease 

Hands-on procedures for locating and extracting lymph nodes

Proper tools, techniques, preservation, and lab submission guidelines

Regional sampling requirements/requests for mandatory and priority hunt areas

Game and Fish urge hunters to learn how to properly locate and remove lymph nodes for testing because CWD is an always fatal neurological disease affecting deer, elk, and moose. Detection through hunter submissions is vital for Game and Fish to monitor disease prevalence and evaluate future herd management actions.

For hunters who would like to learn more about CWD and lymph node extraction but may not be able to attend the training, Game and Fish have produced written guides and how-to instructional videos freely available on the department CWD website.
